From my experience as a university student and higher education administrator, the greatest problem I have encountered and observed among college students is not the lack of support, but the excessive and fragmented resources within the university. Students often struggle to navigate and utilize these scattered resources effectively, leading to missed opportunities for academic and personal growth. They often feel overwhelmed and uncertain about where to seek help for their specific needs.
To address this issue, I propose developing a centralized and integrated app that consolidates all available resources and services in a user-friendly and accessible manner. The app aims to streamline access to academic data and support, career guidance, mentorship, and mental health resources, providing a holistic support system for university students. The target audience will be undergraduate and graduate students across all years and disciplines.
Possible functions of the app include:
Academic Performance Tracking:
Sync with Learning Management Systems (LMS) to pull data on grades, attendance, assignment submissions, and log-in times.
Academic Support:
Provide access to tutoring services, offer a repository of study materials, create study group features where students can connect with peers in similar courses or with similar academic goals, etc.
Career Support:
Career planning tools, resume builders, job search engines, workshops on career readiness, virtual career counseling sessions, etc.
AI-driven Insights:
Use machine learning algorithms to analyze students’ academic data and provide personalized study tips and advice.
Mental Health and Well-being:
Provide access to mental health resources, such as counseling services, stress management workshops, and self-help tools.
Role of this app
There are many existing resources within the university already, yet they are fragmented and not centralized. Will this app merely serve as a repository for these resources, or will it offer new and additional resources and services to students?
Motivation for students to use this app
For students who are not highly committed to their studies, how will the voluntary use of this app benefit them?
Potential ethical concerns regarding connection to LMS / student data
What and how much data should this app draw from the LMS? Should the app include benchmarking with other students taking the same course or in the same major? What are the potential ethical and privacy concerns?
