This is a website for participants of the Cantonese Language Basics at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library. This page will have slides and notes from the various lessons that happened.
Cantonese is a dialect and verbal spoken language. Some grammar may be mentioned as a note. No written Chinese is going to be formally taught.
The goal of these sessions is not for fluency, but for basic conversation and recognition of tones.
In the lessons, you will be seeing Jyut6 ping3 which is Romanized English spelling for how to speak Cantonese. You will also see traditional Chinese characters, because it will be a tool for teachers and non-Cantonese Chinese speakers to differentiate what is spoken Cantonese. Because for instance, as a Cantonese speaker I may not understand spoken Mandarin, but if I see written Chinese characters, I can gauge what they're saying. (L.Yau)
Cantonese is a fun language to speak and it helps with the identity of many people that lives in New York City.
