What makes AOASM unique is that we get to interact with sports medicine physicians who come from a wide range of specialties, and these physicians work with and treat athletes. Some of the specialties in sports medicine include family medicine, internal medicine, and orthopedic surgery. Our field is also unique because physicians get to attend live sporting events where they can treat injuries sustained by athletes right after they occur. Our organization holds events that include sideline medical coverage at football games and wrestling matches with NYITCOM's Dr. Matthew Heller. We also have guest speakers from the field of sports medicine present at our meetings. We discuss how to get exposure to the field, and how to prepare for and exceed in residency and sports medicine fellowships.
Mission Statement: The mission of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine is to provide:
An educational forum for physicians and healthcare professionals to address the quality of healthcare for individuals in competitive, recreational, occupational, and industrial settings.
Leadership to establish, and promote fitness and exercise guidelines, and to guide healthcare policy relating to wellness, physical activities and sporting events.
A collegial environment in which physicians and other healthcare professionals can expand their content knowledge and enhance their clinical skills in primary care sports medicine.
