The Student Challenge
The world is home to 7,000 languages. Half of the world speaks 50 languages, and the other half of the population speaks the other 6,950. It is estimated that by the end of this century, half of the world’s languages will have gone extinct. Since New York City is home to millions of speakers of foreign languages, and this language diversity is part of what makes our city great, your challenge is to document and map the cultural and linguistic heritage of individual communities in various neighborhoods across the city. You will contribute your work to the Endangered Language Alliance, a New York City based organization dedicated to “documenting, describing, maintaining, and preserving languages”.
