Despite the rise of AI use in the work world, it has yet to show signs of taking over blue collar jobs. Jobs such as plumbers, welders, truck drivers, firefighters, and especially auto mechanics do not have anything to fear. In fact, mechanics are one of many professions that AI will never fully take over because these jobs require hands on skill, problem solving, and critical thinking judgement skills that AI simply cannot copy
A recent article from Paul Campanell’s Auto center explains that AI is being used for auto repairs for things like faster diagnostics and predicting maintenance needs. But this article doesn't make it clear that mechanics are still very needed to make decisions, understand the data, and physically repair the car. AI can tell you what “might” be wrong but it cannot crawl under the car, remove a rusted bolt, test drive a car, or even communicate with a customer.
AI although helpful is just a tool as cars become more complex, this means that skilled technicians are in high demand. Instead of straight up replacing mechanics, AI is actually making their work more efficient.
While some jobs may be replaced completely by AI, blue collar trades will remain one of the most difficult jobs for AI to take over. Mechanics rely on experience, instinct, and hands that adapt to unexpected situations. No machine will ever be able to do that.
