In 1970, millions of Americans protested human impacts on climate change through rallies, marches and trash clean ups on a day known as the first Earth day. Earth Day serves to protect the environment and raise awareness about global environmental issues such as climate change and pollution. This year, Earth Day will be on April 22nd, continuing a tradition that began over 40 years ago. This year's theme for Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet,” referencing the small actions that can make a larger-scale difference. As a student, it can be hard to realize the impact of these small actions on the environment, like using reusable bags, or saving energy by turning off the lights. “Our Power, Our Planet” reflects the importance of these daily steps and demonstrates that environmental progress can be sustained through the everyday actions of students, families and the entire community.
What you can do to help the environment as a student:
Participate in school clean ups
Save energy by turning off lights and unplugging devices once they are charged
Buy clothes at vintage or consignment shops
Use less plastic
Use reusable bags
Shop at Nyack’s local farmers market
Smaller school lunch portion sizes to reduce waste
Printing double sided paper to reduce the use of paper
