The Skills Bright Sparks programme is New Zealand’s top competition for young inventors aged 11 - 18 years old. In 2019 there were only 28 finalist nationwide and 4 of the finalists were for outstanding young women form Northcross Intermediate.
Our four brilliant and talented Northcross Inventors were Angelina Yang (Y7), Casey Richardson-Mould, Isabella Mumford and Summer Bailey.
Angelina Yang (the youngest finalist in 2020) won the People's Choice Award and the Most Outstanding Engineering Award, invented and developed an automated table tennis serving machine, which can serve players different speeds and angles.
Isabella Mumford invented a more sustainable, accessible Epi-pen that is small and can be worn on the body with a case that she had 3D printed.
Casey Richardson-Mould, a keen Ripper Rugby player, invented and developed a Ripper Rugby belt with an alarm system to notify players when the tag has been pulled off.
Summer Bailey a budding software developer, invented and designed an App that will monitor environmental conditions and collect data of the surrounding environment, to help determine optical conditions for tree planting and growth.
All four of our female finalist were acknowledged for their amazing success as young women in S.T.E.M this year, and appeared on Seven Sharp to celebrate this success. They also travelled to Massey Univeristy Wellington, Design School to meet with lecturers and graduate students to share their projects and explore design and innovation projects being completed at the university.
As a school we are incredibly proud of the achievements of these 4 students, and we look forward to following their success in the future!
