Congratulations to Cannon Pridemore our October Student of the Month! Cannon is in 7th Grade.
Congratulations to Pete Miller our November Student of the Month. Pete is in 6th grade!
I'm sharing with you our student produced and student created school news broadcast. These students plan and make these in Mr. Wise's class and other students get to watch during homeroom. One of my favorite parts is how the students have innovated each episode. Follow the channel for past/future broadcasts: https://www.youtube.com/@NMSNEWSTIGERS
Dear Parents and Students,
I want to thank everyone who took the time to attend our parent/teacher conferences. One of the topics I included in our last newsletter, but want to bring up again is our MS Assignments Page (CLICK TO VISIT). Every N.M.S. student has a button on their iPad that links directly to this page, which provides a running list of assignments and homework. We designed the page as a tool to strengthen communication with families. I want to give special thanks to the teachers on our leadership team—Ms. Shrock, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Miller, and Ms. Holt—for helping create a resource that makes it easier for students and parents to stay updated.
Last week many of our 8th grade students were on our annual field trip to Washington D.C. I want to thank Mrs. Miller for all of her work this year helping make the trip successful. There were some last minute changes due to the federal goverenment shutdowns and our students still had a great experience. If you're in 7th grade this year be on the lookout for meetings next semester for students/families interested in attending next year as 8th graders. We aim for the week following fall break.
Additionally, Mrs. Temme organizes career exploration trips for our students who are unable to attend the D.C. trip. The students completed Stem Activities provided by Howard County Extension Office and Howard County Recycling, visited Mayor Tyler Moore, KPD, KFD, Kokomo Howard County Public Library (main branch), two local Career Centers (Kokomo and Lewis Cass) and Heritage Lanes! Thanks to Wendy’s (Dixon), McDonald’s (Sycamore), & Sonic for allowing us to eat lunch out! It was a wonderful week. !A huge thank you to her for helping organize and for those that help support our kids each year.
Warm regards,
James Bishir
Principal
N.M.S.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Please join us as we honor our nation’s veterans at our Veterans Day Program on November 11th at 8:30 am (this is a corrected time from the newsletter) in the High School Main Gym. Please enter doors 1 or 43 for the program. Our Middle School and high School students will share special performances. We hope you can attend!
Congratulations to Vera Rupp, Sofia Lopez and Aaron Ramsey! They will be representing Northwestern Middle School in the 2026 IMEA Elementary Honor Choir. Avery Rupp, Julia Rossiter and Jada Young will be representing Northwestern Middle School in the 2026 IMEA Middle School Honor Choir. This is a huge honor! The 150-170 student choirs represent an elite group of singers from all over the state. Our students had to go through a rigorous audition process to be accepted into the choirs. They will perform on January 16, 2026 at the Embassy Theater in Ft. Wayne.
Dear Students and Families,
As we enter November, a month dedicated to gratitude and reflection, I encourage everyone to take a moment each day to recognize the positive things in your life. Practicing gratitude not only helps us appreciate what we have but also strengthens our emotional well-being and relationships.
Here are a few ways to make gratitude a daily habit in our homes and school community:
Share one thing you’re thankful for at dinner each night.
Create a “Gratitude Jar” where everyone adds notes about what made them smile.
Write thank-you notes to someone who has made a difference in your life.
Wishing you all a joyful and grateful November!
Warmly,
Ericka Echelbarger

Message from Assistant Principal Mr. Ward:
This time of the school year is a good time to remind you of eligibility requirements for sports and event participation. To participate in school sports you must be considered in 'good standing' with your grades. To be considered for participation you must be passing five of your classes. If you are deemed 'ineligible' due to 9-weeks grades you may not play until the next qualifying event. In the case of grades, that would be mid-term.
Additionally, if you are not at school due to illness or suspension, you are not allowed to participate in same day athletic or extracurricular activities, including events like dances or concerts. Simply put, if you're too sick to attend school, you should stay home in the evening to rest and recover. We do understand that sometimes there are extraordinary circumstances and these do not include pre-arranged approved absences. If you have questions please contact me.
Warm regards,
Ryan Ward
Assistant Principal
N.M.S.

IN REMEMBRANCE
Pete was a Social Studies teacher at the HS and assistant athletic director for NMS. His passion was track and field and could set the record time running a school track meet. He passed away at the end of October and he will be missed.
Karalee Graves was a Special Ed instructor for NMS and passed away after her battle with cancer. She helped lead student council and was always advocating for kids. We will miss her positivity and creative spirit.
Each year we sponsor an Elder Tree during the Christmas Season. We partner with 'The Brickyard' nursing home to help provide gifts to their residents in need. Students and families may provide a gift by choosing an Angel off the tree. We ask that any gifts purchased be returned before December 16th.
If you have any questions please contact Julia Malson julia.malson@nwsc.k12.in.us

Good Luck to the Tiger Band as they compete in the State Finals!
We are excited to announce that our 6th graders will begin their swimming unit on November 10th. This is a mandatory part of our curriculum, and we are excited for the students to participate. It is often the student’s favorite unit of the school year.
At Northwestern School Corporation, we take pride in teaching swimming during the school day as a vital skill to prepare students for potential water emergencies. We believe it is important that every child learns to swim.
Please ensure that your child comes prepared with a swimsuit (one piece for girls), a towel, and goggles (if available). We will be swimming during PE class.
Thank you so much for your help. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out via school email.
Mrs. Walters and Mrs. Brock
From: Mrs. Sparling and Mr. Treadway
We’re excited to share an update on this week’s Spell Academic Bowl competitions and to celebrate the hard work of our students and families. At the Western Invitational, our teams represented Northwestern Middle School with focus and fantastic sportsmanship. Team B scored 20 and finished second out of five teams, while Team A scored 19 and took third place. Mrs. Sparling and Mr. Treadway are very proud of the dedication each student showed in practices and during the event. State competition results will be announced by soon. We will post the official outcome as soon as it’s available.
Our success this week is the result of many contributors. Team A — Shelby Pinder, Brinley Laird, Cannon Pridemore, Berklee Beaver, Jayceon Bryant, Claire Davenport, AJ Ruddell, and Parker Maple — and Team B — Alexis Whitenight, Ember Pelgan, Clara Pearce, Lucy Collins, Greyson Sebura, Jocelyn Sleeth, Addy Brown, and Anabelle Collins — demonstrated perseverance, teamwork, and strong problem‑solving under pressure.Marycate did a great job as our scorekeeper. Coaches, staff, and families who supported rehearsals, logistics, and transportation deserve our sincere thanks; we are grateful for your ongoing support.
If students are interested in joining next year’s Spell Academic Bowl team, please contact Mrs. Sparling for information about tryouts and practice schedules. We also welcome parent volunteers for future events and practice sessions — your involvement makes a meaningful difference for our teams.
Thank you for partnering with us to celebrate student growth and achievement. We look forward to sharing the state results and more highlights in the weeks ahead. Spell you later!

Reminder
Students in all grades by law are required to meet the minimum immunization requirements before the start of school unless the school has received annually either a religious or medical exemption.
All documentation must be provided before the October 7,2025 exclusion deadline.
There are several students still missing required immunizations, especially sixth graders missing the required sixth grade immunizations Tdap and MCV4.
Contact our School Nurses if you have questions, immunization updates, medication to drop off: ext: 2320
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us ; elizabeth.smith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had multiple incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Students who go home and are not sick will be unexcused. We appreciate your support and understanding.
