Principal's Note:
It is a goal of mine this year to help keep you more informed about activities at the Middle School through a periodic middle-school specific newsletter. I'm excited to offer you the inaugural edition of the N.M.S. 'Tiger Print.' More exciting is the fact there are some big changes underway at Northwestern Middle School including the preparation for the addition of sixth grade as early as the 2024-2025 school year. We don't anticipate many building changes this year, but as construction begins we will do our best to adapt to make N.M.S. a better place. Please continue to check your email for skyward messages as well.
Let me tell you briefly about our new staff members. Mrs. Jennifer Smalley joins us as an 8th Grade Language Arts instructor with over 20 years of experience from Kokomo schools. Mr. Evan North is in his first year as a teacher for our 7th Grade Social Studies classroom and is an Indiana University graduate. Mrs. Trina Yager joins us from Howard Elementary and is doing a fantastic job as a new instructional assistant. Last, but certainly not least, is the addition of Mr. Ryan Ward as our Middle School Dean of Students. Ryan joins us from Northwestern Elementary School.
We are already halfway through the first nine weeks! Please check your child's grades via Skyward. If you have questions/concerns about your child's progress in class please check our STAFF PAGE for contact information to email your child's teacher. Also, check the tab at the top of the page for VIRTUAL LEARNING information in the event we do not have school.
Thank you!
Message from the Dean:
I am so impressed by the start to the school year our students have had at NMS. The 8th grade students have shown exemplary leadership, while our 7th grade students have bought in to our “Earn Your Stripes” mindset here at the Middle School. S.T.R.I.P.E. stands for Service, Thoughtful, Respectful, Integrity, Positive, and Excellence. Everyday we expect our kids to demonstrate those characteristics. Whether its students volunteering to clean up the cafeteria after lunch, serving as our school honor guard, or organizing school spirit days, N.M.S. is a place of positivity and togetherness. When at home, ask your child if they have earned any “Tiger Stripes” recently and inquire about our positive behavior system.
I would also like to take this time to remind our parents about some services that may be of interest to you or your child. Every Tuesday and Thursday, our National Honor Society provides free tutoring after school until 3:30 in room S-10. This is a great opportunity for students who need assistance in a specific subject, need to catch up because of extended absences, or simply just want to get ahead in their class.
As a middle school parent/student it is never too early to start thinking about your academic path in high school and beyond. Use this link to learn more about the 21st Century Scholar Program. https://learnmoreindiana.org/students-families/grades-6-8/
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3014.

Here are some notes from the 8th Grade Team:
Our Eighth Grade Washington, D.C. trip is quickly approaching - October 24-28. If your eighth grader is attending the trip, please pay close attention to emails in the upcoming weeks.
Mrs. Temme is planning some exciting local field trips for students staying in Kokomo during this time. Details will follow in the upcoming weeks.
Please remind students to charge iPads each night before going to bed. Additionally, this is becoming even more important as the iPads start to age.
Here are some test taking tips from Mrs. Graves:
Ms. Marissa Shrock (7th Grade Team Leader)
Ms. Marissa Shrock (7th Grade Team):
7th Grade Computer Science: We are discussing digital citizenship for computer science, so there are a lot of things that you can discuss with your student!
Be sure to ask them about their social media use and their digital footprint.
7th Grade Science: Students just finished a unit on Engineering design focusing on biomechanical engineering where they designed and programmed Lego wheelchair/snowplows and created shoes to help people with common foot problems. We are currently studying force and motion while finding the average speed of hot wheel cars on straight tracks, curved tracks, and loops. Eventually, students will use the principles they learn about motion to create theme park attractions.
Seventh grade Health and Physical Education is a combined grade throughout the year. During health weeks, students will be having homework and quizzes as they complete each unit. Physical education class is working on the fitness tests of sit-ups, pushups, flexibility, endurance, and speed. Please encourage your student to bring a change of clothes during physical education.
General 7th Grade Tips: Please remind students to bring their iPad chargers with them to school in case they need to charge their iPads during the day.
Students should check each teacher's Google Classroom for assignments that they miss when they are absent. It is also a good practice for students to talk to their teachers when they return to school. Students get one day to make up work for every day they miss.
