Further, I'd like to share two charts of information with you. The first Graph is an attendance chart comparing us to the state average. If a student misses more than 94% of the school year they are not represented on this chart. One of the best things you can do to help your child's academics is to ensure they are attending school consistently. Indiana regards the attendance measure as one of the measures important for students to 'Graduate Prepared to Succeed.' As you can see Northwestern is above the state average, but the trend is downward and we have room for growth. You should anticipate more stringent attendance guidelines as schools continue to prepare students to meet Indiana Standards and to be successful after High School. The best thing you can do to help is to make sure your child is at school each day they are healthy.
The 2nd Graph is our percentage of students who have earned HS credit in grades 6-8. As you can see Northwestern is well above the state average. According to state guidelines this indicator measures three of the five characteristics of a "Graduate Prepared to Succeed": It measures Academic Mastery, Career and Postsecondary Readiness, and Work Ethic.
Message from the Dean:
I hope everyone enjoys a much earned Spring Break with their family and friends. Once we return from Spring Break, I will be meeting with our 7th graders for their 8th grade scheduling. As an 8th grader, students have opportunities to earn a high school credit in different courses. The state of Indiana uses different indicators to measure school and district wide success. One of those indicators is the amount of advanced coursework prior to 9th grade. We are proud to say that last school year, 91.5% of our students at NMS earned at least one high school credit before entering 9th grade. The state average was 35.2 % Great Job Tigers!!!
In Mr. Bishir's message you will find our testing dates for ILEARN. Please read our Testing Tips to help you get through the assessments!
Get Plenty of Sleep: Students who have proper rest, usually recall information better than those who do not.
Eat nutritious foods: Proper foods can give you energy and make you feel refreshed.
Make your bed in the morning: It sounds silly but accomplishing a small task to start the day can make you feel productive, accomplished, and confident.
Exercise: Burn off that nervousness and anxiety.
Do Something For You!: Whether you enjoy going to the movies, hiking, getting ice cream, or just hanging out with friends, reward yourself for doing your best!
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3014.
Mrs. Pam Miller (8th Grade Team Leader)
Here are some notes from the 8th Grade Team:
Our students did a fantastic job on the trip to Wabash to see "Harriet Tubman." We received multiple complements our our students level of respect and attire. Thank you for supporting them and our trip. Many students enjoyed the show and learned from the experience.
We are currently planning on taking our 8th Grade students to Ivy Tech on May 3rd to explore career options and May 19th our students will hear from professionals in other fields as we continue to offer career exploration opportunities.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. We appreciate your support and understanding.
Ms. Marissa Shrock (7th Grade Team Leader)
Ms. Marissa Shrock (7th Grade Team):
When we return from Spring Break, we like to encourage our students to do their best as we prepare for our I-Learn assessments. Soon, you will receive more information on our field trip to Buffalo Wild Wings that we use as an incentive to celebrate our students' hard work and achievement. Students who do their best during this most crucial time will be eligible to celebrate together on May 19th.
Students in Mr. Wise's class programmed "Micro-Bits" with an LED screen and accelerometer to play a game of rock-paper-scissors.
Welcome Mr. Brandon Tripp who is a student from Indiana Wesleyan University. He's been student teaching in Mr. Chamberlain's classroom. He has already been hired to teach Chemistry at another district when he graduates this Spring.
We are converting our annual spring chocolate fundraiser into a D.C. Trip Fundraiser. Any current 7th grader who is going to Washington D.C. will be able to use the proceeds to help offset the cost of their trip.
Rocky says: It's really hard to text without thumbs.
Internet + Etiquette = Netiquette (How you behave online is just as important as real life)
Remember: Who you interact with online is a real person with feelings, lives, and opinions. Be kind.
Criticism: It's easier to give criticism when not face to face. Always think of how you would want to be treated.
Good Rule of Thumb: If it would not be acceptable in face to face behavior then it isn't online.
Sarcasm is tricky. Jokes and sarcasm are easily misunderstood in text. Be Careful.
Forever: Remember what you post, type, or send can be on the Internet for a very long time and saved forever.
Blocking: If someone you know continues to practice bad Netiquette and refuses to stop you should block that person from communicating with you. You didn't make the choice to block them, they made that choice when they refused to stop. Do not continue toxic conversations.
Rick Kerr (Bus Driver for Bus #8) Passed away after a short battle with cancer. Rick was a wonderful member of our Northwestern family and will be dearly missed.
