Principal's Note:
Recently, I attended a college visit to Ball State University with my son. While there I was able to drag my family kicking and screaming to The Bob Ross Experience at the Minnetrita Estate. Like many children of the 1980s I sat mesmerized watching him churn out 'masterpiece' paintings in 30 minutes or less. His soothing voice and calmness resonated with millions and he became a worldwide sensation. Thanks to YouTube he may posthumously be more famous than ever and you'd be surprised at how many kids have watched his shows online. What reached me more than anything was how many others he inspired through his passion. Included in the exhibits were replicas of his famous paintings that were tried by countless others, and each person who met or worked with him all observed that he cared about sharing that joy which he found from painting. I realized on my trip that Bob Ross was essentially a great teacher who taught with an infectious passion, and even though he taught in a relatively obscure place in Indiana on a local PBS channel he became a worldwide sensation because he cared for his students. In one episode he painted in all grey because one of his viewers wrote to him that he was colorblind, and Bob made a point that art can be enjoyed regardless of what colors you use. Mr. Ross doesn't receive many accolades in the Art world, but there are plenty of lessons to be gained from how he reached his students.
I hope you enjoy our newsletter, but if there is a typo remember, "We don't make mistakes, we just have happy accidents."
Message from the Dean:
February will be an important month for our current 8th graders and their high school scheduling. Please mark in your calendars the below dates:
February 7th- Initial Schedule Meeting (Students)
The 8th grade class will meet in the auditorium during the school day. Our high school guidance counselors will take this time to introduce themselves to the students, review the timelines and processes involving high school scheduling, and answer some general questions students may have.
February 8th - Elective Fair During Homeroom (Students)
Elective teachers will use 8th grade homeroom time to share with students in detail about options they have in high school, outside of their mandatory classes.
February 8th - Current 8th Graders/Incoming Freshman Parent Night (Parents and Students)
Members of our Middle School and High School staff will team up to help make the scheduling process as transparent as possible for all of our students and families transitioning to High School next year. We will meet at 6:00pm in the cafeteria. After the students have met in their initial meeting the school day before, this is a great opportunity for us to work with and inform families with any specific questions they may have. During this night, we will also have computers set up for any family that needs assistance in applying for 21st Century Scholarship.
Don't worry 7th graders, we haven't forgotten about you! In late February/early March, be on the lookout for more details about scheduling for 8th grade classes!
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3014.

Rocky says: Valentine Day stresses me out. All of that chocolate that I cannot eat!
Believe it or not, life can be stressful, even for a Dog! Here are some tips!
Get a good amount of rest! Teens should have 8-10 hours a night! Dogs need more!
Find healthy activities and hobbies that make you happy and incorporate them in your routine. For instance, I like chew toys! Just don't overdo it.
Engage in Physical Activity. Exercise releases chemicals in our brains that can help make you feel better. I always feel better after a walk!
Focus on your strengths. Spend some time focusing on what you're good at and find ways to do more of those things.
Talk to Someone: Everyone likes to talk to me because I'm a good listener and I can't talk back. However, it's hard to manage stress alone. Make sure you talk to a parent, teacher, or a trusted adult and they may be able to help you find ways to manage your stress.
