November/December
November Student of the Month:
Griffen Miller
December Student of the Month Winnie Kling Congratulations!
Special Thanks to our Student Council Members, Parents, and Mrs. Graves for attending the Red Ribbon Christmas event for the Kokomo Rescue Mission.
Principal's Note:
Like all fun things, this school year has gone too fast. Since it's almost Christmas Break we are excited to host our Winter-Semi Formal this Saturday. We are pre-selling tickets for $10 but they are also available at the door, however we ask you to buy early so we know how many to expect. Please have your student bring their ticket, but if your student loses their ticket don't worry - we have anticipated that and can check our list. (Just like Santa!)
Regarding Winter, I was extremely proud of our community during our distance learning days. We had a very high participation rate, and our students were online on time, ready to learn, and our teachers were present to teach. Special thanks to you for adjusting to our schedule change. If you check our Distance Learning page, we have gathered feedback to create a schedule we feel will be less confusing and easier to navigate in case of further distance learning days. Our teachers have also helped educate our students on the new schedule just in case. Each student has the calendar loaded to their iPad as well.
At the end of our newsletter is information regarding the 21st Century Scholar program. Do not hesitate to take advantage of this opportunity if you qualify.
Here are some upcoming MS Events:
Choir Concert: Dec. 7th 7:00pm Auditorium
Winter Formal Dance: December 10th 5:00pm-7:00pm Middle School Gym
Next Week: Dec 12-16th Click for: Dress-Up Days

Message from the Dean:
It is hard to believe we are already near the end of our first semester. As we are approaching the halfway point in the school year please keep in mind our attendance policy here at Northwestern Middle School:
- There is a 10 day limit of absences. These absences include both “excused” and/or “unexcused”.
- After 10 absences the Principal and/or Dean will review the absences to determine if any further action may need to be taken. Actions may include parent conference, probation, attendance contract, and expulsion.
- For any high school class, students with more than 10 absences in a class may lose high school credit for the
respective class.
Not only does this policy help keep our building consistent with the other schools within our corporation, more importantly, our policy follows Indiana State Law.
We love seeing your kids in school everyday and take notice when they are not here. Understandably so, situations such as illness, personal, or family vacations will occur during the school year. If your child is going to be absent please notify the school immediately!
If I don’t get a chance to see you before then, I wish you and your families the Happiest of Holidays this season!
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3014.
Mrs. Pam Miller (8th Grade Team Leader)
Here are some notes from the 8th Grade Team:
I would like to send a big thank you to everyone who supported our eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip in some way, shape, or form last month. Indeed, this trip would not be possible without ALL of you.
70 of our eighth graders and 25 parent chaperones were able to explore important parts of our nation’s history. After leaving NMS the Monday evening after fall break, we started at Mt. Vernon on Tuesday morning, explored D.C. through Thursday morning, and ended in Gettysburg Thursday afternoon/evening. We had beautiful weather and safe travels!
You would be so proud of our eighth graders. They did an outstanding job representing our school, county, and state in our nation’s capital.
If you see any of these eighth graders, feel free to ask them about the trip. They are happy to share stories. (Some are educational, and some are related to food and other memories. This group would definitely win the award for the most D.C. hats purchased on a trip. :)
Again, thank you for your support in this meaningful trip!
Pam Miller

Rocky says: Being a good friend is important. I'm Man's Best Friend.
Friends are important. Here are some tips on being a good friend:
Be friendly and approachable.
Practice striking up conversations with people. Questions like, "what do you like to do for fun?"
Ask questions to keep a conversation going. "That's cool, how does that work?"
Sit at a new table during lunch.
Give them snacks (Like Scooby Snacks) Wait, that's for me, but Mom says I can't have them.
Chat with someone who's alone. "Would you mind some company?"
Try out for a sports team or become the manager.
Join an after-school club such as FFA.
Don't be controlling. "I won't be friends with you if you're friends with _______"
When you make a mistake apologize.
Accept when a friend apologizes; Nobody is perfect.
Your student may be eligible to attend collage in Indiana on a 100% scholarship if you meet certain income and academic requirements. The catch? You must enroll before the end of of your 8th Grade year.

The nervousness from the “director” in the middle was quickly replaced with a huge smile once he saw how much the others liked what they saw!

8th Graders visited 7th Grade classrooms to share what they learned on the Washington D.C. Trip.
Did you know: Students on the D.C. Trip share their pictures with an App called Photocircle. Parents are able to follow the trip in real time. If you're in Seventh Grade and interested in attending the D.C. Trip next year information will come 2nd Semester.
