Principal's Note:
This school year has been off to one of our best starts yet. I want to thank Ms. Shrock and the rest of our staff for helping with our new student orientation day. Before the school year began you should have received our back to school message which is also linked to this newsletter. We have some new staff including Mr. Aaron Herrema who comes to us from Indiana Wesleyan's Teacher Program which has produced some outstanding candiates for Northwestern Schools the last couple years. Briane McMahan will be working in our Special Education department as an Instructional Assistant, and Patricia Anderson joined us on 8/28 as a peer coach. We're excited to have all three working with our students.
I'm also very proud of how our students and staff performed on last year's assessments. N.M.S. I-Learn 7th Grade Math scored higher than 95.5% of schools in Indiana. 8th Grade Math was higher than 90.75% of schools according to the IDOE. Our Language Arts scores were well above state averages as well. https://www.in.gov/doe/it/data-center-and-reports/
Additionally, the NMS Leadership team is striving for 100% participation for students in extracurricular activities, clubs, or co-curricular programming. Statistics overwhelming prove that students who are involved do better. To encourage participation students will meet every 2nd Wednesday with a club of their choice. We're currently offering 16 choices of club activities which range from choices such as student council and photography. Yours truly will offer a Pokemon Go Club, and Mr. Ward is teaching a class on life skills such as 'how to tie a tie, or jumpstart a car.' Hopefully, your child is as excited as we are about our club offerings.
Please review the rest of the newsletter. Each year our largest fundraiser has been our fall chocolate sale. This activity helps support our student activities such as our 'Tiger Stripe' program for positive behavior and our end of the year field day. As far as fundraisers go it's also fairly simple as well. Please support if you can.
Thank you,
Mr. Bishir
Message from Assistant Principal Mr. Ward:
Greetings,
One of my roles as Assistant Principal is to monitor attendance. Last year our school discipline committee determined attendance as the #1 factor that affects learning in our school. It's also an Indiana State Law that your child does not miss more than 10 days of school per year. This does not include days that are excused by a Dr. Note. However, this does include excused days and vacation days. Please do your best to ensure that your child is here ready to learn each day.
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at
ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3014.
Jennifer Smalley is our 8th Grade Team Leader. If you have specific questions about 8th grade academics/grades/etc please email jennifer.smalley@nwsc.k12.in.us
Lorri Schuler is our 7th grade Team Leader. If you have question about 7th grade academics/grades/etc please email lorri.schuler@nwsc.k12.in.us
TEXTING HOME REMINDER:
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Thank you, we appreciate your support and understanding.
Do you have medication your child needs during the school day? Please let us know how we can help. Ext: 3011. The school cannot give your child medication without a signed form and the medication in our office. Please do not allow your student to transport/carry medication while in school.
Reminder
Contact our School Nurse if you have questions/immunization updates
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
Matthew Taylor received his kidney transplant! We wish him and his family the best as he continues his journey. In the background is the 'Donate Live' interactive display that represents each person who received a transplant. After receiving a transplant they place a bead in one of the letters. Matthew placed a blue (kidney) bead. It's a great reminder of how many lives are saved by organ donations.
Students in Mrs. Sinnamon's Science class learn via Lego Robotics. This week they start designing orthopedic footwear as they learn about anatomy.
THE N.M.S. Building Expansion will begin Nov. 1st. Please stay tuned for possible changes in procedures.
World's Finest Chocolate Fundraiser forms will be available starting next week. The official fundraiser kickoff is Sept. 18th. All sales go to support student activities such as our Positive Behavior Program (Tiger Stripes) and activities such as field day rentals.
I'm always ready for school picture day!
Things to know about Rocky
I'm a certified support dog trained by an organization called I.C.A.N. You can read about them here: https://www.icandog.org/
Dogs and pets are not allowed on campus, but I am school board approved because of my training.
I have some rules. One rule all students are taught it to ask permission before you pet me. My handler almost always says yes, but it prevents me from being overwhelmed.
I love all human food, especially candy, but it upsets my stomach. To prevent me from eating wrappers and things that would upset my stomach please don't leave candy wrappers/food items on the ground at school.
Many students who feel overwhelmed or need calmed come see me throughout the day. I love people.
Check out our Athletics Page for more information about sports. Make sure you and your athlete are registered on 'Final Forms' and have a physical submitted before your season starts. You can also select sports you're interested in on 'Final Forms' to be notified of try-outs etc..
