Principal's Note:
Seasons Greetings. Last week you should have received an email reminder about the expectations of distance learning vs. e-Learning. These expectations are also included in each newsletter via the link provided. With the winter season upon us it's important we work together to ensure our students stay on track if we have to miss school because of the weather. Our teachers work diligently to ensure that live instruction is provided on distance learning days as our past experience has taught us our students do better when a teacher is live. Please do your best to ensure your student is online following the schedule provided. The distance learning schedule is also included as an icon on each student's iPad.
While e-Learning is not our first option, sometimes the weather is too bad for even adults to drive to school with a delay. In those cases e-Learning could be assigned with assignments posted online and no live instruction. Attendance is tracked by completion of work on these days. If your student cannot attend online due to illness or internet connectivity please notify the office as you would on any day your child cannot attend school.
Last but not least, Mrs. Jennifer Bowen is retiring at the end of this semester. Jennifer has taught at Northwestern for 26 years. She has always done her best to make sure her students are prepared for Math at the next grade level. An example of her hard work and determination was illustrated during and after covid when her students performed at some of the top levels in the state in 7th grade on the state assessments, and she was one of the leaders in offering live instruction to her students. Additionally, she was instrumental in fundraising for the Humane Society and the Kokomo Rescue Mission during her annual donation drives. Everyone is really going to miss her on 3/14 when her students donate Pies for "Pi" day. She also started our Elder Angel Tree tradition. The middle school has helped make Christmas a happier time of year for hundreds of nursing home residents thanks to Mrs. Bowen. We wish her the best in retirement.
I hope this Christmas Break and the last remaining days of 2024 are peaceful for you and your loved ones,
Mr. Bishir
N.M.S. Principal

Our Music Appreciation students led by Mrs. Mast learned that a N.W. Graduate once made it big time in the music industry. She earned grammy nominations and was the 1982 Country Music Artist of the Year. Mrs. Mast made some connections and Sylvia Kirby visited our school last Friday. She spoke with students in the new cafeteria and she graciously took many pictures with them. Sylvia is still making music and you can get more information about her at https://www.sylviamusic.com

The holiday season can be especially stressful when making ends meet or when you realize a loved one is not able to be there this year. If you feel you or a family member needs help with any of the wide range of mental health issues please send an email to Ericka.Echelbarger@nwsc.k12.in.us (our head of guidance) with the subject line: Care Solace. Northwestern is partnered with Care Solace to offer 3rd party help to our families to help them connect with resources they may need. They can look at your insurance or lack thereof and help connect you to what works best for your situation.
8th Graders visited Ivy Tech Kokomo to learn about post-secondary options. Ivy Tech does a wonderful job informing our students about career pathways in the trades. We visited the Body Shop, HVAC room, advanced manufacturing lab, welding area, and various labs dealing with electrical work, pipefittings, and robotics.
Each year Mrs. Bowen and her students have helped donate thousands of dollars worth of supplies to the Humane Society and the Rescue Mission. I wanted to take a moment to recognize her efforts since she will be retiring at the conclusion of this semester.
The season for weather delays is approaching. Please review our distance learning page for more information in case of school closure.
Reminder
Contact our School Nurses if you have questions/immunization updates, medication to drop off: ext: 2320
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us ; elizabeth.smith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had multiple incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Students who go home and are not sick will be unexcused. We appreciate your support and understanding.
