Dear Parents and Students,
We cannot be more excited to start this school year. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been asked "is the building going to be ready?" The answer to that is we will be opening on time and 90% of our classrooms are ready, but there are few finishing touches. It's not ideal, but we've already handled more difficult challenges. Rooms that will be in a temporary classroom location at the start of the year will 8th Grade Science and the middle school Agriculture classes. Each of these classes is expected to be in a new classroom before the start of the second semester.
It's our first year with grades 6-8 and that makes us officially a middle-school! With the addition of a grade level, the near completion of a multi-year construction project, and a record number of new staff it should be quite an interesting school year. Please view all the information in this newsletter. There are major changes to some procedures like morning car rider drop-off for example. Change can be hard, but I'm optimistic that many of the changes will be for the best. You can click here to see the list of teachers that will have at least one middle school class on their schedule or use the "MS Teachers" tab at the top of the page. Our back to school letter also contains most of the information in this newsletter as well.
Warm Regards,
James Bishir
Principal
N.M.S.

Message from Assistant Principal Mr. Ward:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well! Even though I primarly deal with dicipline as the AP, we do have a system to positively encourage kids as well. I am writing to share some important information about our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program and the vital role it plays in creating a positive and supportive school environment for our students.
At N.M.S., we believe that fostering a climate of respect, responsibility, and encouragement is essential for every student’s success. PBIS is an evidence-based approach that focuses on reinforcing positive behaviors, which ultimately helps to create a safe and productive learning environment. We prioritize a positive to negative ratio of at least 4:1 — meaning that we strive to offer our students four positive reinforcements for every corrective action taken. This approach allows us to guide our students in a way that supports their emotional, social, and academic growth while ensuring that they feel recognized and valued for their good behavior.
As part of this initiative, our students earn a Tiger Stripe card for demonstrating key traits that are foundational to our school culture. These traits—Service, Thoughtfulness, Respect, Integrity, Positivity, and Excellence—were chosen by all of our stakeholders, including parents, students, and teachers, when we first implemented the PBIS program five years ago. The Tiger Stripe represents these core values, and we are proud to see our students consistently exemplifying them in their daily actions.
We believe that these values not only help our students grow as individuals, but also set a standard of excellence in our school community. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic fields, or in the hallways, students who show Service, Thoughtfulness, Respect, Integrity, Positivity, and Excellence are acknowledged and celebrated for their efforts. This positive reinforcement empowers our students to continue developing these essential skills, which will serve them both academically and in their future endeavors.
The support we receive from you, our parents, is key to the success of this program. We encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of these traits and the positive behaviors they can exhibit each day. Together, we can continue to build a school culture that supports our students' growth and success in all areas.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support as we work together to help our students thrive.
Warm regards,
Ryan Ward
Assistant Principal
N.M.S.
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3104.
Students can either scan the front of their Tiger Stripe or choose a button on their iPad to 'register' their award.
Prizes are given out by random, but top receipients in each category also receive end of the year awards/medals.
The staff member selects the positive trait(s) and tells the student why they earned a Tiger Stripe
When a student records their Tiger Stripe they are asked to share why the attribute they were recognized for is important. Here are some of their responses: These are direct quotes:
To be good to each other don’t judge a book by its cover
To make us better adults
To make us better humans
It shows that someone cares.
If our school thrives for excellence so will the rest of our community.
Excellence is important for myself and the community because we need to all work to be great and to work hard. If we all work on being excellence, we can accomplish a lot more, and we can work to make the world better,
It is important for these to be a kind person in school
Service it’s important because it helps others out, and makes me feel helpful.
Respectfulness is important so that even if we lose in a game, people are still cheering for everyone.
Do the right thing even if you might be the only one doing it.
Because my Mom likes when I act this way.
Grade Level Leaders:
If you have specific questions about general grade level topics. Grades academics/grades/etc. please contact the team leader for that grade. This year we have the following Team Leaders:
pamela.miller@nwsc.k12.in.us (8th Grade)
marissa.shrock@nwsc.k12.in.us (7th Grade)
lindsey.holt@nwsc.k12.in.us (6th Grade)
Rocky, is one of our favorite staff members! He's here to help support students who are having a bad day. He has been extensively trained by the I.C.A.N. organization. Rocky has a few rules.
Please ask before you pet Rocky. The answer is almost always going to be Yes.
Please do not feed Rocky and keep food/wrappers/candy in their appropriate place. If not, Rocky WILL find it and he has a sensitive stomach.
Hopefully we're through the season for weather delays. Thank you for your help in making them as successful as possible this year. Just in case: Please review our distance learning page for more information in case of school closure.
Reminder
Contact our School Nurses if you have questions, immunization updates, medication to drop off: ext: 2320
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us ; elizabeth.smith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had multiple incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Students who go home and are not sick will be unexcused. We appreciate your support and understanding.
