Welcome to the Science Of Reading Professional Learning Series provided by Oregon Response to Instruction & Intervention. These slide decks are intended as resource for school leaders who provide professional development for staff in the area of literacy.

We know that each educator is in a different place in their understanding of what is meant by the phrase The Science of Reading and how that science informs what we teach and how we teach it. These slide decks provide a brief overview of each of the topics. These serve as a starting point for each person's journey into building their skills and knowledge to be able to teach every child how to read. 

It is essential that staff continue to develop their knowledge of science-aligned reading instruction. There are many more in-depth courses available. All educators deserve the knowledge, aligned materials and coaching to teach effectively.

Who should participate in these sessions? Anyone who teaches reading and the school leaders who support them! We are all on this journey together. Do you have staff who don't teach reading who will attend your session? Click here to find out ways all staff support literacy development. 

Each session includes:

• Something to read, watch or listen to ahead of time*

• Something to engage the staff in discussion of the topic

• An opportunity to make connections to how the topic relates reading instruction and materials used in your setting

• Resources to dig deeper into the topic

* If you do not use the flipped learning model, you will need to allow more time in each session for staff to read, watch or listen to the content.

Please note: These are not recorded modules. Someone in your setting will need to prepare to lead these sessions. Additionally, you know your colleagues best. You may need to tweak the suggested activities to fit the size of your staff, the time you have, and the way your staff best engages in professional learning. In the notes of some slides, there are suggestions for how you could adapt the activity.
