The Multi-Tiered System of Supports, or MTSS, is a prevention, early identification and intervening process. Much like RtII or “interventions”, MTSS is a process that emphasizes how well students respond to changes in instruction. The difference between our prior interventions and MTSS program is a focus on instruction in the general education classrooms as opposed to a pull out program.
MTSS addresses high quality instruction in the regular education setting. Grade level goals are set and students are grouped based upon universal screening results. Classroom teachers and reading teachers plan side by side to develop appropriately tiered supports. These supports may take many forms depending upon the needs of the students. In some classrooms, lessons are co-taught with a classroom teacher and reading teachers. Small group guided instruction and centers also help our students to acquire early literacy skills. The students progress is monitored to assist with instructional decision making. Students in need of more intensive support will move to a tier 2 or tier 3 support. These tier 2 or 3 supports may look like additional time provided by either the classroom teacher or MTSS reading teachers, a smaller instructional group or one-on-one supports.
Grade level teams meet monthly with the MTSS reading teachers, guidance counselor and Principal to review student progress and plan instruction.
