The Science of Prevention
This Toolkit contains resources from trusted sources who also employ Best Practice guidelines. Please follow these guidelines when considering resources:
Avoid scare tactics.
Look out for unintended consequences. Examples:
Myth/fact presentations can reinforce myths.
Young people who hear a personal testimony by someone in recovery may leave with the message, "Well, that person used and they were able to stop, and now they're famous."
Showing vape flavors can actually create an attraction.
Match resources to the audience. Example: parents may need detailed information about types of electronic cigarettes, young people do not.
Correct misperceptions and highlight accurate norms. Example: some young people think "everybody" uses, when in fact, surveys show the majority of youth choose NOT to use. Highlight the number of youth who DO NOT use.
Focus on healthy alternatives to use.
Avoid one-time assemblies and events.

These programs fit as alternatives to suspension. Some students who start out participating related to a disciplinary issue may decide to pursue cessation services.
