What does a school-based speech-language pathologist do?

Speech pathologists diagnose and treat students with speech and language difficulties.

These difficulties may include:

      • Producing speech sounds (e.g. articulation and phonology disorders, apraxia)
      • Using correct grammar and sentence structure
      • Following directions
      • Understanding vocabulary words
      • Stuttering
      • Voice disorders
  • Students who are diagnosed with a speech or language disability receive speech and language services through their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Students who demonstrate difficulties in the classroom with speaking, listening, reading, writing, and/or social language skills may qualify for speech improvement services.
  • Eligibility for speech improvement services is determined via speech and language screenings, classroom teacher recommendations, and/or collaboration with the school's Child Study Team (CST).
