Looking for strategies to get your child into the "back to school" mindset? Take a look at these ideas!
Create a positive “back to school” mindset. Students are doing something important. Going to school is not a chore and it can lead to a lifetime of success!
Establish a night and morning routine.
At night, aside from all hygiene practices, ask your child to help you pick their outfit, plan their breakfast and include them in any reasonable decisions you think they may enjoy.
For the morning, develop a quick but personalized ritual you can do together right before leaving the house; this can replace a challenging goodbye at school (a fun handshake, a code word for "I love you", or whatever works for you both)!
Have your child wake up with enough time to prepare for their day and eat a healthy breakfast.
Validate your child's concerns while reassuring them. Our feelings come and go, we simply must use our "tools" to get us through the tough times!
If your child becomes homesick, leave small tokens of affection in their backpack that they can keep with them. This can be a family picture or an item that reminds them of home. Remember to speak with your child's teacher about this so you can work collaboratively to support your child.
Read plenty of informative, silly and fun stories, all related to this topic! Doing so can generate creative ideas, enhance dialogue and even reduce worries (or provide opportunities to practice new ways to cope with these worries)!
