Expectations

I am excited about the 2022-2023 school year! There may be changes made to these expectations throughout the year based on our current circumstances. For any additional information, please refer to Google Classroom, our class website, and the weekly emails that are sent home.

Instruction:

Students are expected to complete their work in a timely manner. Due dates and times will be provided for all assignments, as well as given ample time to complete work. Students will be able to access lessons and information during instruction for each class. All work will be posted in Google Classroom and can be accessed at any time. All the necessary and required health and safety precautions will take place during instruction, as needed.

Class Rules:

In order to have a productive and engaging learning environment each day, the students are expected to follow the class rules. I believe in the 5 P’s:

  1. PROMPT - Be on time and ready to learn.

  2. PREPARED - Come with all your books, materials (including computer), homework, and/or any other assignments due that day. You are responsible for your work.

  3. PARTICIPATE - Ask questions, engage in group or partner discussions, share with others, and complete what is expected each day.

  4. POLITE - Treat others the way you want to be treated and remember to be respectful towards everyone. Your actions can affect others.

  5. PATIENT - Please wait your turn, whether you are raising your hand or wanting to share in a chat, waiting for me to meet with you, or listening to your classmates

Students who are positive, contributing members in this class will receive:

  1. Verbal praise

  2. Written praise

  3. Positive parent contact—emails and phone calls home

  4. Leadership roles, special honors and privileges

  5. Class rewards

  6. A positive classroom environment

If student behavior prevents our class from functioning, consequences will be determined based on the HPS Middle School Discipline Response Table.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Students may have to complete assignments over the weekend if they are working on a long-term project. There will be reading homework each night. This includes at least 20 minutes of independent reading time. There may be grammar and/or vocabulary homework depending on what we are working on in class. Students will have written assignments/mini-projects given on Monday that are due by Friday. As far as writing homework is concerned, the students might have to finish an assignment from class or reflect on a piece that was completed in class. All work is due during the student’s ELA periods or by the end of the day, depending on what is required. If homework and/or projects are submitted past their due date, points may be deducted based on the grading rubric. Students will have to make up all work that is not submitted or completed on time.

Grading Policy:

All assignments will be graded using 1 - 4 rating scale. This aligns with our Standards Based Reports Cards, which is being implemented in the middle school this year. Written work, essays, quizzes, tests, projects, or any other graded work will be graded based on the standards being assessed in that particular assignment. All grades will be entered into Realtime in a timely manner. Rubrics will be used for all assignments, as well as projects, and the students will know what is expected of them prior to beginning a task or assignment. They will also be used to evaluate student notebooks for both reading and writing when appropriate.

At the end of every trimester, the standards will be analyzed and the students will receive a 1-4 for every standard in ELA that was assessed during that time period.

4 - Exceeding Standards

3 - Meeting Standards

2 - Approaching Standards

1 - Needs Support

Absences:

If a student knows they will be absent, they should let me know ahead of time. I can prepare any materials that the student may need during their absence. When a student is absent, they have as many days as they were absent to make up their work. All work will also be listed in Google Classroom so students can use that as a reference if they are absent. Please contact me if there are any questions or concerns regarding a specific manner.

Extra Help:

If students need help regarding anything from class, they may set up an appointment to come for Before School Help (8:05-8:25) or stay after school for After School Help (3:05-3:30).
