Here at Northwest, there are very minimal field trips for students in their program areas. Students are here to learn and study their specified area, and field trips can allow for further learning outside of the classroom. In addition, they are an exciting and memorable way of educating students.
Program areas here at Northwest are the most important classes, and are most of the reason why students attend. Going on multiple field trips each year can and will enhance students’ learning. “If we could have field trips in program classes, we would be learning so much more than just what we’re taught in the classroom,” a student at Northwest says.
For the majority of students, they are in certain program areas based on their idea of their future job or dream job. Having field trips is a good hands on learning strategy where students are able to engage in a variety of ways that may be more entertaining than sitting in a classroom for hours on end. These field trips would be able to give students a sense of what it would be like in the real world with jobs associated with their chosen field of interest.
Field trips are a great experience especially for important lessons such as those to be taught in each of the program areas. Another Northwest student said, “If we had more of these field trips, it would help us learn more in our program classes”. Although the program classrooms have their own materials for hands-on and realistic teaching, it would be nice to see students go on field trips to really see workers doing these jobs.
