Northwest Career and Technical Academy embraced music at lunch for a few months, but after a short run, the music was no longer played.
NWCTA started playing music in the quad on Oct. 31st, and many people enjoyed the music. However, in late December they discontinued playing music and the atmosphere that the music brought disappeared.
The music began when students from Personal Leadership were tasked to present a way to improve the school to administration. Riley Baker along with several other students suggested playing music during lunch. Their idea was approved.
Baker played the music everyday depending on her lunch schedule. She loved playing music and watching her peers enjoy it. “I think playing music created a happier and less stressful environment,” she explained, “When students were coming to lunch stressed out from tests and homework, the music was a way to destress and have fun.”
At lunch, you could see the students sing along to songs and enjoying the trendy music that the leadership class provided.
Jaden Balboa, a sophomore at Northwest, believed that the atmosphere during the time they were playing music was great. “The atmosphere was very comfortable,” she recalled, “As everyone knew the songs and sang and danced sometimes.”
Sebastian Kordt, another student, is disappointed that they have lost the atmosphere that the music brought. “I don’t really see the same positive energy as I did during those months where music was played,” he said.
Based on the response from students after the music stopped, administration should allow the students to resume playing music. The music has always been positive and clean, and overall, listening to music will allow the students to better enjoy lunchtime.
