At Northwest Career and Technical Academy, many students have differing opinions on whether the hawk walk during P.E is really dangerous. The hawk walk started when the school first opened up because students needed somewhere to walk and exercise. The idea of the hawk walk came about because it also allowed students to interact with others while doing the mile run.
On the other hand, many students at Northwest feel that the hawk walk is unsafe. One section of the hawk walk requires students to walk near the main road. This concerns many students because there are groups of kids walking in an open area where many cars may be driving by.
Courtney Nakagawa is a freshman at Northwest Career and Technical Academy that thinks that the main road part of the hawk walk is dangerous. Nakagawa states, “Cars can plow into the students if the driver isn’t careful.” Nakagawa knows that she has to be more aware of her surroundings when walking near the main road.
Krystal Kasimoff is another freshman that attends Northwest Career and Technical Academy that believes that the hawk walk is dangerous just because of the main road section. Kasimoff thinks that it is alarming that kids can get badly hurt near the road. Kasimoff thinks that this is something to be worried about.
Eric Cohan, is one of the P.E teachers at Northwest Career and Technical Academy. Cohan explains how he has witnessed some cars that pass by speeding down the main road. However, he believes that the main concern isn’t the main road, but the entrances and exits.
Cohan sees a safety hazard when students have to cross over to get to the other side of the sidewalk. Cohan thinks that if a student isn’t paying attention when crossing, and there is a driver speeding out, then the student might get hit. Although, Cohan believes that as long as there is a teacher watching, and the students are more cautious of their surroundings, then the hawk walk should be safe.
Nethertheless, safety is the number one concern in both the main road and the entrance/exit. This should both be taken into consideration. We should do something to prevent a bad accident from happening, especially with so many careless drivers in today’s society.
