Many students that attend Northwest Career and Technical Academy question whether or not ID badges are really necessary for the school. Required carrying of ID badges started last year as a school because of past history of violence in school campuses. ID badges will ensure the safety of the students and school.
Some students dislike ID badges because they think it ruins their outfit. Other kids do not like wearing badges because they feel that they are being labeled. Many other kids just forget to wear their ID badges.
Katherine Luna-Lugo is a freshman at Northwest Career and Technical Academy that doesn't believe in the fact that students should wear their ID badges. Luna-Lugo states, “The ID badge policy is annoying.” Luna-Lugo thinks that Northwest should get rid of the ID badge procedure because most kids just don’t like it.
Ms. Karen Galindo, is the Assistant Principal at Northwest Career and Technical Academy. Galindo addresses that the main purpose of wearing ID badges is so that it will keep the students safe, and prepare students for the work industry because many jobs require you to wear ID badges. Galindo states, “Wearing your ID badge is more important than the inconvenience.”
ID badges should be required for all schools. ID badges are part of the school dress code, so it is important to wear it everyday. If a student forgets to wear their ID badge to school four or more times, they are assigned to a parent conference.
The number of students that show up to school without their ID badge is very low. In a week, less than 20 kids show up without their badge. This number is very good considering that there are more than 1,800 kids that go to school at Northwest.
Many kids don’t realize it, but ID badges are there for identification purposes. ID badges should be taken seriously. If something bad happens, staff will know immediately the kids who are in school, and the kids who aren’t in school.
ID badges are a good thing to have, and they should be appreciated more from students. ID badges will make kids and staff feel more secure at school. Since school violence is a major threat to schools today, ID badges are extremely important and essential for schools such as Northwest.
