As AI (artificial intelligence) usage has exponentially increased, so has the lack of effort in assignments. Accompanying the lack of effort is the absence of basic life skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking.
“When it replaces effort instead of augmenting it, rather than improving an ability, you’re losing it,” IT specialist James Rich explained. “If you’re using it for ideas, and the footwork is done yourself, that is what AI is intended for.”
The line between using AI for mere ideas and solely depending on it is well-defined; however, some students still cross it.
“Just under 46% of students in grades 10 to 12 said they used tools like ChatGPT, Dall-E 2, Bing Chat, and others on a combination of school and non-school assignments at the time of the survey,” ACT officials found.
Although AI is utilized for myriad negative purposes, it has some positive aspects. These positives include: Teaching the user about a given subject, assisting with writer’s block, and even assisting with source finding.
“AI was insanely helpful bringing me from days of writer’s block to almost completely done within a few hours,” sophomore Christal Szymanski stated. “AI has taught me many things, mostly from the search engine aspect, but also when answering a question.”
