Samay Verma is a freshman student at Northwest Career and Technical Academy. While in middle school Verma attended three different presidential award ceremonies.
There are two presidential awards that a student could be nominated for. The first presidential award a student can be nominated for is for educational excellence. This award recognizes academic success in the classroom. The second presidential award a student can be nominated for is for educational achievement. This award recognizes the student that shows outstanding education, growth, improvement, commitment or intelligence develop in the academic subject.
Verma’s opinion on the presidential award is that “ It’s a little bit dumb because it can make you feel bad about yourself since you may have done worse than your peers.” As a result of that, he doesn’t think that he is qualified for the presidential award because he’s never received it before.
Verma said “ If I ever received a presidential award I think it would be the achievement award because I've always had perfect attendance.” He thinks that because it shows that he’s committed to school.
Verma doesn’t feel that the presidential award is good for students because many students won’t try to receive this award and also this award could put too much pressure on the students that want to achieve the award.
But Verma feels for the students that do win this award it could help them in the future on the college applications. Verma said “ I feel that the colleges will pay more attention to the students if they have achieved the presidential award.”
