Wednesday, Jan. 8, Lola Brooks was elected CCSD Board of Trustees President and is representative of District E, which includes Northwest Career and Technical Academy.
Brooks moved to Las Vegas, Nev. in 2002. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at the University of Nevada and earned her Masters in social work. Brooks is the first in her family to receive a traditional high school diploma and first to graduate college.
Brooks was first elected to the board in 2016 and worked as a nonprofit consultant as well as a project coordinator at United Way of Southern Nevada. She currently works as a Student Data Analyst at a charter school.
As mentioned previously, Brooks is the first of her family to complete her education. In an interview from the Las Vegas Review Journal, Brooks claims she had a troubled childhood and often did not go to school. She takes pride in being apart of the school board and advocates for families in poverty and children in need
From an interview with a member of the community who wanted to remain anonymous, they had stated, “I have faith that Brooks will do great things for CCSD. She’s been on the board before and I trust that she will take care of the district.”
Alongside Brooks, Trustee Linda P. Cavazos was elected as vice president and Trustee Chris Garvey as clerk. Trustees are elected for four year terms and represent different parts of the district. Each trustee has completed six hours of professional training and work to earn their position.
Only time will show how the new trustees perform.
