The Sadies dance has been breaking gender norms for a few generations, but it may not be as relevant. On January 21, the dance was held in the banquet hall at NWCTA, and many girls were asking guys to go to the dance that week.
Sadies is a dance where girls get the chance to ask guys to dance for once, helping normalize that within society, and it’s positively impacted some of our students. Kylie Grady and Angel Guevara, juniors, had quite a few things to say about it, and they were also pretty similar, and neither of them have heard of Sadies before.
“I think Sadie’s is setting an example for girls to ask out guys,” States Grady, “because it is something that they can do in a fun way.”
Grady believes that, as a female, it opens up opportunities for girls to break gender norms in our society. Many feel weird about the roles being reversed because it is so normalized for the guys to be the ones to make the first move and ask girls out.
“It is a little weird since guys asking out girls is considered the norm rather than the other way around,” Said Guevara, “but it should be accepted within today’s society.”
Many students were getting into the spirit week of the Sadies dance, which was good since it helped many get excited about the role reversal. However, many probably didn’t even realize they were breaking the gender norms.
“I think Sadie’s is impactful,” Said Grady, “because it gives opportunities for girls to ask out guys and have fun hanging out.”
