Students in the cafeteria looked around in confusion, not knowing what to do during the first fire drill at lunch. Two fire drills happened within a short period of time.
As stated from Ms. Cornman, a counselor at Northwest Career and Technical Academy, “If a fire drill happens during lunch, it wasn’t actually a drill. It was an actual emergency.” This explains why no one was prepared during lunch.
Amy Nova, a student at Northwest, shared how this affected her school day. She believed that the “drill” during lunch was to prepare students for possible events. It has affected her by reducing the amount of time she has in classes.
If one were to look at the microwaves in the cafeteria, they would see new signs reminding students, “do not put Cup of Noodles in microwave unless it was water in it!”
On the Cup of Noodles, the directions clearly state to not microwave the cup. Microwaving the cup without water can cause the cups to overheat and set the fire alarms off.
To prevent bad things happening during a fire emergency, it would be safe to learn fire procedures. Always know where the emergency exits are and be careful around flammable substances.
Whether the fire was caused by ramen noodles or the kitchen, students at Northwest should be educated in fire safety at any time of the day.
