Students are in need of nutritional school lunches that enable them to do their best work in their academic careers. There have been many complaints over many years, yet the Clark County school district refuses to take action. Let’s hear what high schoolers have to say about the school lunches provided at their campus Northwest Career and Technical Academy.
“I don't eat school lunch because they actually look disgusting and they don't look super healthy and filling. With the lunch that I eat, I'm not hungry until like 2:30 or 3:00,” sophomore Gaby Hawkins says.
Hawkins talks about how she doesn’t prefer eating school lunch because it doesn’t look particularly appetizing to the eye. It also looks extremely unhealthy and not filling. Students such as herself have to resort to making their own lunches to make them balanced, which other students may not have the ability to do due to financial reasons. There is a clear reason for the importance of healthy and delicious school lunches, to which another student agrees.
“We wake up so early and many of us have to catch a bus in the morning or are very busy after school, so there isn't enough time to actually have a good, nutritious meal,” junior Alexis Hall says. “School lunch might be the only food some people here get for the day, so it's important that it is healthy and nutritious while still tasting good. If we had better food, people would probably also do so much better in school.”
Students in high school typically have more responsibilities when it comes to academics, there’s the option to select higher-level classes and students are able to participate in after-school clubs or activities. When dealing with so many responsibilities, it’s important to give your body lasting food to turn into a good energy supply. Hall mentions how there’s a possibility that students could do better in school if they were given healthy brain food. A website titled “ordo” shares similar ideas.
“Healthy school lunch is important for students' mental health for a combination of reasons. First, nutritious food helps to improve concentration and focus, which is essential for academic success… By providing healthy school lunches, we can help our students to thrive academically, emotionally, and physically” Ordo reads.
Apparently, the concern for non-beneficial school lunches is a worldwide shared opinion. It should be criminal to give students food that’s bad for them, that doesn’t have any benefits to their learning and health. If we work together and preach as one, we might be able to make a change for the greater good.
“It is important for everyone to have a nutritious meal at NWCTA because nutrition is a fundamental part to run the functioning systems of one's body. If someone has a nutritious meal, they will function better, but they will also feel better about themselves,” sophomore Alexi Rich says.
