It is very important to constantly be aware of your surroundings, as car crashes will always be a part of life. In Las Vegas alone, there’s been a 46 percent increase in crashes from 2015 to 2016.
At Northwest Career and Technical Academy (NWCTA), there are many students walking to and from home as well as riding the buses from school. During this time, there are many different ways that students can be injured.
Not too long ago, there was a crash with one of NWCTA’s busses. Heather Brown, a freshman in the accident, says that the bus was pretty much full, on its second to last stop, when a car sped around the corner and slammed into the side of the bus.
Although these incidents are terrifying, they happen more often than you may think. In 2018 alone, there were 301 motor vehicle accidents in Las Vegas. Still, this number continues to rise. Buses included.
16-year-old student Abigail Donegan talks about her experience in a bus crash. “It was surreal to see the bus tipped over on the sidewalk. Thinking there were kids in there... they must have been horrified.”
Many people do not have the circumstances to be in these kinds of crashes; however, simply walking by the road makes it very easy to be in some sort of crash. Ms. Galindo, NWCTA’s Assistant Principal, recommend a few ways to stay safe on the streets.
“Be very aware of your surroundings,” she explains. Ms. Galindo warns to always watch for other drivers on the road, saying “Even if you are a good driver, they may not be.”
It is also better to wear lighter clothing if you are walking, and try not to wear earbuds. Always be aware of what is going on in the area, so try to limit the amount of texting as well.
Limiting distractions are best when on or near the road, and always try to do the best to keep yourself and the people around you safe and out of danger.
