Clubs are vastly underrated, and can be beneficial in a variety of different ways that students don’t acknowledge enough. Clubs at Northwest CTA, such as DECA, SOL club, and Cosmetology club, have proud members ready to speak on this subject.
“SOL teaches students how to dance and is a place where everyone can learn different styles of dancing,” Gissell Torres, sophomore, shows her gratitude and love for SOL club every day. “Everyone comes from different cultures and it's a great learning experience for others. This club is a very comfortable place for me, with everyone being so open and welcoming. It is one of the reasons I would be in a good mood the whole school day.”
Everyone has those days where getting up for school is the last thing they want to do. A fun or interesting club could be the reason a student would want to get through the day. Clubs also give students an opportunity to receive rewards and chords, all by doing things that you like and are interested in.
“You can earn chords by being in DECA for two years and with ten hours of community service," said Brayden Bailey, sophomore. “DECA teaches students to be leaders in hospitality, and prepares them for a career in the hospitality and marketing world. DECA is great for me because I am doing something that I like.'' DECA members are forever appreciative of Bailey, and he continues to be a proud, effective leader of DECAs financial branch.
Clubs are a great way to make new friends. Belonging to a club means more than just being a member of a group, it means being a part of a community. When you find a community that supports you, it can help reduce feelings of isolation and depression.
“I started getting into beauty in middle school around 7th grade,” said Valerie Garcia, sophomore. “I never had much of an interest in it but I am more so interested in the community that it comes with! I love how supportive the people in the beauty community are and they are definitely a girl's girl! Cosmo club has helped me make friends by finding people with similar interests and just giving me the chance to engage with people outside of classes.” Garcia is the proud vice president of Cosmetology club, and she appreciates what her club has done for her.
