There are many different types of study methods out there, and it’s important to find what works best for you. Even though they usually aren’t one size fits all, there have been many studies on what the best ways to retain information are.
While it is important to know how to study, the first step is having the time. Balancing a busy schedule can be hard, but time management is an important step in effective studying. One study done on this was by the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.
“Time management—how we choose to use and organize our time—is something many of us struggle with. Effective time management allows us to make the most of our day, accomplishing tasks more quickly and prioritizing those that will make the most impact,” the article says.
The next step in finding the best way to study is figuring out what type you like to use. Two freshmen, Kaylen Euretig and Addison Woodbury, gave their takes on study types.
“My favorite type of studying is hands-on,” Euretig comments.
“I prefer visual learning like pictures, videos, and step-by-steps,” Woodbury explains.
Once you get those problems settled, you can look at some of the many study techniques. One largely accepted method is the retrieval method. This involves trying to recall information from memory. Whether it be done using practice tests, writing it down, etc. the main goal is to create long term memory. This method can be applied to other tools as well.
“I like using flash cards because they are helpful for memorizing things like formulas and definitions,” Euretig voices.
Flash cards can be useful tools, but can be improved by combining them with the retrieval method. This can be done by writing down what you think the answer to the flash card is before flipping it over.
There are many other ways to study like the SQ3R reading method, the Feynman technique, mind mapping, and more. It is vital to find the proper ways for your material and preferences. Woodbury explained another important topic during her interview where she addressed videos.
“The best study method for me is watching YouTube videos.” Woodbury remarks, “Watching videos on the topics I’m confused about can give me another perspective and explanation.”
There are tons of lessons, Youtubers, and resources that can be found through YouTube. It can be a valuable tool and can also help people who need background noise or music.
Everyone’s different when it comes to studying. However there are many ways to find what works best for you. The most important part is to remember what you’re learning and reduce your stress.
