In a world of streaming, there's something special about the crackle of a vinyl record spinning under the needle. Whether you're a music enthusiast chasing a familiar feeling or a curious newcomer drawn to the vintage scene, starting a record collection is more rewarding than you might think. Here’s how to turn your passion for music into a timeless sound.
Record collecting is something that generations of people can share and enjoy. Terry Foster, English teacher, seems to know his way around the vinyl collecting scene.
“I first started collecting vinyls when I was 15 years old in 1984, I had roughly over 5,000 albums on record before I sold my collection in September of 2024,” Mr. Foster shares how vast his collection was.
Starting a record collection can be one of the hardest parts in the hobby. When starting, you want to make sure you have a set budget.
“Money. Collecting records gets expensive so you want to make sure you have some play money,” Gavin Carroll, senior, says.
Records could go from a couple of dollars to hundreds of dollars, this depends on rarity and condition. Having a financial plan helps ensure you can enjoy the hobby without spending all your money. Once you’ve established your budget, the next step is to find the right places to look.
“Rather than going to a record store, if it’s a popular album I would suggest going to a used record store first because It'll be the same condition but a lot cheaper than buying brand new,” Mr. Foster adds.
Many collectors are drawn in by the unique sound quality that digital formats of music can’t replicate. Teens especially are getting more into the hobby everyday, but why is that?
“I started collecting records because I’ve always been interested in the hobby, I have a few friends who collect them. I also like collecting records because it’s a good way to directly support the artist.” Gavin Moore, senior, states.
Starting your record collection is an experience that combines financial planning, exploring, and passion. With a budget in hand and a local record store, you are on the way to create a record collection that reflects your musical journey!
