Students at Northwest are seeing a rise in careless Halloween costumes.
Alex Smyth, a senior, has observed a huge lack of originality during the spooky season.
“I definitely have noticed a decline in costume creativity. A lot of people have been wearing very subtle and easy sorts of things, not wanting to put in the effort of putting an entire costume together,” Smyth said.
Smyth advises people not to let peer pressure influence their decision when searching for something to wear.
“My advice to someone looking for a costume idea would be to think about all of the things you like, like movies and video games, and see if something sticks out to you and seems fun to dress up as,” Smyth voices. “Don't let people make you feel bad for wanting to dress up.”
Ethan Powell, a junior at Northwest, feels like people have been getting lazy with the execution of their costume ideas.
“One of the worst costumes I’ve seen was a girl who tried to dress up as Tinkerbell, but she was just wearing a green t-shirt and a jean skirt. People are getting less and less creative every year,” Powell stated.
Smyth believes that people are scared to put effort into their costumes in fear of being the odd one out.
“I think the resistance to being different and the whole laziness epidemic have been the biggest factors for the lack of creativity,” Smyth shared. “A lot of people are scared to do anything different from the crowd and stand out in any way, even if that means not dressing up for Halloween or making their costume anything more than plain and simple.”
