During Jan. 17-18, the second competition between different high school Jesters’ teams happened between 30 different teams. This is the second of 18, which happen almost every weekend from Jan. 10 to Mar. 14 and ending with the playoffs in late March, going through April.
This most recent competition had 30 teams competing, six on Jan. 17 and 24 on Jan. 18. NWCTA’s team competed during the latter of the two days from 10-11 a.m, going up against Cimarron-Memorial High School.
The competition consists of two teams playing three games total, two of which they play together. The weekend included NWCTA and Cimarron-Memorial playing To Do Rap Rap and Town Hall Meeting, while alone NWCTA played Backwards Scene.
Many of the games require audience interaction, for which the hosts ask the audience for wacky ideas that the players can compose a scene off of. Each team has four players competing at one time, with a total of 8 on stage, performing, at any one time. The players have to compose a scene based on a game they’re playing, and these audience ideas are what the scene is based on.
Many of the students who participate in these competitions enjoy them, use them as a way to communicate with more people, and do something a little out of their comfort zone.
The High School Jesters League organizes the competitive weekends with the schools that participate and their respective teams, having the host school participate in the Friday competition at 6 p.m. High School Jesters League is a nonprofit organization, and they “promote improv as a way to develop relationships, build strength and trust between one another, and demands sportsmanship.” They can be found at https://highschooljesters.com/index.html.
Competitive Jesters is a fun and exciting way to meet with other people. It is enjoyable to watch live performances at local high schools. The competitions between two schools are always an hour, so if it’s one school or every school, there’s always something short but funny to watch at a High School Jesters League competition!
