“How do you ask someone out and when is the right time to do it?” -Anonymous
At Northwest, there are a ton of adorable couples, and they all had to go on a first date at some point. In order to get there, some methods will multiply the odds of your crush agreeing to a date.
The first step to gain their interest is flirting: smile, maintain eye contact, tease, and create slight skin to skin contact. An example could be subtly touching knees under a table or getting caught looking at them then looking down and smiling. Also, seem generally interested in what they have to say and remember things about them.
If they reciprocate attraction, patiently wait for a good moment to ask the question. Don’t do it over text because the risk for misunderstanding is too high and its integral to gage their reaction (unless the only speaking occurs online via social media, facetime, and text). Also, make sure it is not in front of everyone and that your crush is in a seemingly good mood.
Its okay to feel nervous and excited before springing the question, but be prepared for rejection. It's not their fault if they simply don’t feel the same, so don’t get mad.
Phrase the question by asking what they are doing this weekend; then, ask if they want to go on a date with a specific event at a specific time. Vagueness scares people so having the event planned will moderate their anxiety. For example ask, “Would you like to go get coffee with me on Saturday morning?”
Another tip is don’t profess your undying love for them and scare them away. Get to know them by having more one on one time before a confession that large. Generally, it's recommended to have at least five dates before saying anything of that nature.
Finally, avoid asking them to a movie for the first date. It's hard to talk with dialect from the characters blazing overhead, and it can be awkward if you don’t know them that well.
Good luck Northwest students!
