Highschools around the nations are changing into a college-based system. Some see the change from High School classes to higher level classes as an opportunity and some see it as a stress-filled mistake. The students at Northwest shared their thoughts on the issue.
Highschools are already used as a way to prepare students for their future lives, but a new system was
created and is being tested. The idea of changing highschool into a more college based system has
raised a lot of controversy from both sides of the argument. Some believe that it will better prepare you for your future, others strongly disagree.
When asking students if they would like the college based system better, there were many different answers. A sophomore answered “Yes I would probably like it better because I would have college credits to help me when I go to college”.
Another approach when asked the same question was, “Yes and no. It gives us better opportunities for our future but it also sounds like a bigger workload when I’m already struggling.” Which brings up a good topic: the opportunities it provides for the people trying the new system.
When students were asked what benefits they see from switching, a shared topic was more freedom. For example, being able to leave campus for lunch. “I think we should be able to have an open campus for lunch because we have tons of food places around our school, so we could go grab lunch and come back in plenty of time” is an answer from a junior. Both sides agreed this was a large benefit of switching up the system.
Other than freedom, another benefit was preparing for the future. “I believe this change in high schools would prepare us for real colleges as well as the
