R&B or "rhythm and blues," became a thing in African American communities in the 1940s. Many people have different opinions on who is the best 90s R&B artist. Although some songs were played more than others, those records don’t technically define who the best artist is. Students at NWCTA as well as Damonte Ranch High School have their personal perspectives on who they believe is the best 90s R&B artist of all time.
Senior Rigoberto Renteria has been listening to R&B since his childhood, and has made this genre one of his all time favorites.
“Prince was a very good performer, and he was very known for his electrifying live shows and charismatic stage presence. His influence on countless artists across various genres further solidifies his legacy as a musical icon” Renteria says. “Overall, his creativity, artistry, and impact on the music industry make him a standout figure in R&B history.”
Prince apparently is really popular, hence his inspiring performances and influence on the world. Prince is also really well known due to his songs in general.
““Raspberry Beret,” a catchy melody. “Sign o' the Times," a socially conscious track with a haunting sound. Each of these songs captures different facets of his genius and contributes to his lasting legacy” Renteria comments.
Since Prince clearly had a memorable legacy, there has to be other artists of the same suite.
“Keyshia Cole is the best, her voice control is absolutely amazing,” senior Emma Dhamo notes.
Keyshia Cole has one of the most infamous songs of today’s teenage generation. Her music also happened to be requested during a Homecoming dance featured at NWCTA.
“”Love” and “I Should've Cheated” are her best songs because you can feel the emotion in the lyrics” Dhamo mentions.
Love was the song that was played at a previous NWCTA homecoming dance. It is one of the most widely known songs in the Nevada community, amongst many others.
“Personally, I believe that Lauryn Hill is the best 90s R&B artist because her music is very versatile. Also, she won several awards for her solo album and is still just as iconic to this day,” senior Karmen Ivory says.
Lauryn Hill started off in a small band of three called the Fugees. She soon became a rising star and continued to adventure out as a solo artist.
“She only has one solo album; “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” and my favorite album from the Fugees is "The Score". Both of these albums also have versatile songs with deep meanings, Lauryn, Wyclef, and Pras are all talented artists. It's hard for me to pick a favorite from her but the ones I listen to the most are "Nothing Even Matters,” “Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You,” and “Forgive Them Father” Ivory remarks.
All three of these artists seem to be quite appreciated in their genre of 90s R&B. Although opinions were gathered, it doesn’t truly define who the best artist is of this specific genre. A poll perhaps might be more accurate. Though, it’s still enjoyable to hear about the students of Nevada and their opinions on 90s R&B.
“The 90s R&B era is often regarded as a golden age for the genre, characterized by its rich melodies, lush production, and deep emotional expression. This decade saw the rise of influential 90s R&B and is celebrated for its innovation, emotional depth, and cultural significance” Renteria reflects.
