It would be odd to have a PG movie centered around dating apps, but that is exactly what “Swiped” is. The movie was released Nov. 26, 2018, but recently it has resurfaced to the media and has received a lot of negative attention.
Most of the movie is based off of stereotypes. Everything from its plot line to its characters show no originality or creativity.
The main character , James Singer played by Kendall Sanders, is what the movie would call a “computer geek.” It shows in the beginning of the movie that he doesn’t have many friends and spends most of his time on the computer, making him the ultimate computer genius.
The movie stars Noah Centineo, who also plays Peter Kavinsky in “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” The character he plays in “Swiped” is a stereotypical antagonist in a school movie named Lance Black.
Lance sees that James is good with technology and basically bullies and blackmails James into creating a dating app for him. James reluctantly agrees, but he had hope that the app would impress his crush.
The movie received a 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.1/10 on IMDb. “The movie wasn’t good in my opinion.” says Valeria Rojano, a student at Northwest.
Neither the script nor the actors portrayed how people actually communicate or act. It seemed very awkward throughout the whole movie. There was also very little character development shown.
“Swiped” understandably had overall bad reviews. In most people’s opinions it was awkward and didn’t have a very good plot.
