The animated Disney film “Mulan” has been made into a live action movie, which comes out on March 27. Disney has released a number of live action movies including The Lion King, Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin, but Mulan is the first one that is rated pg 13. As for the upcoming movie itself, it will not include any musical numbers as the original does.
It also doesn’t include some characters from the original such as Mushu. Although this new Mulan is based off of the original one that came out in 1998, the story is inspired by the legend of Hua Mulan. It’s a 6 century folk tale about a woman who poses as a man to join the Chinese army.
This folk tale was a popular story that children in China grow up hearing about, which is what made Disney choose this story to turn into a movie back when the Chinese film market was strong.
As for the new live action film, they wanted to prioritize the legend which is why they didn’t include any musical numbers or Mushu. They wanted to make this new film a more realistic film rather than a fun and child friendly film that Disney is usually known for making. Since the trailers have been released, it was described as a “fantasy war epic” rather than a lighthearted musical that Disney is usually known for from their films.
A recent poll was taken, which showed that 90 percent of people are interested in seeing this new film. “It seems like a Disney film that is unique from the rest of the films that Disney has come out with in the past, which interests me in seeing it.” said an anonymous sophomore at NorthWest High School. Even though the new film may not be fit for younger children to see, it’s like a new big idea to Disney because the last pg 13 film they came out with that isn’t Marvel or Star Wars was Pirates of the Caribbean back in 2017.
