Many people say video games are a waste of time, however arcade games have the opportunity to benefit someone’s learning and most people overlook it.
Over 85% of kids in Las Vegas play video games. Most of those kids tend to be told not to play video games because they don’t teach you anything. But those parents aren’t aware that video games have the power to actively help their kids with their academics. There are different aspects of video games that are able to improve kids' academic skills.
“Arcade games can very easily improve someone's memory by allowing them to build memory through learning attributes of the game to progress further,” Joey Vindiola stated.
Vindiola, a sophomore at Northwest, is one of the many kids that play video games in his free time. He has noticed that playing certain games have slowly helped him improve his academic performance in school.
“Arcade games benefit someone’s learning by causing them to have to pay attention to what they have to do in the game,” Chloe Mclaughlin expressed. “Paying attention to this can cause them to learn how to pay attention in class. when learning how to correctly pay attention in class it can help them grasp the idea of the topic and overall help them on tests and or assignments.”
Mclaughlin, also a sophomore that goes to Northwest. She explains how video games are able to improve kids' learning ability by applying what they have learned from the video game into their academics.
“Arcade Games will 100% help with someone's hand eye coordination if they apply themselves to push through challenges and find a way to have better attention,” Hayden Bassick explained. “For me, I had a really tough time paying attention and I would look everywhere which caused a lot of problems. Arcade games helped me break out of this bad habit and it has really made me better.”
Bassick, a junior at Northwest with personal experience to share. She goes into depth about how playing arcade games was able to help improve her academic performance at school.
“All of these aspects can ultimately help in someone's education because it can improve practical skills, responsiveness, attention to classes and lectures, and also learning to retain any information being thrown at you. These aspects can all help you succeed academically in any of your classes,” Mclaughlin exclaimed.
