Welcome! 

My name is Melissa Herout, and I am the literacy specialist at R.E. Tobler Elementary. I have two sons that are 17 and 9 years old that keep me very busy. We love to spend time outside, watch movies, listen to live music, and play games. My boys and I like to travel especially to the spend time outdoors. Our favorite place is going the beach. We have a desert tortoise named Torti and a cat named Orbit. They both have the best personalities. Scroll to the bottom of this page and click on the image of the tortoise to learn more about Torti. Besides being a mom, the experience of teaching kids how to read and love reading is one of the greatest joys of my life. I have been an educator for 21 years. I spent 3 years teaching in the Chicago area and moved to Las Vegas 18 years ago. I have taught kindergarten through third grade. I have also been a reading interventionist, instructional coach, and literacy specialist on an off through those years. I have tutored students one-on-one in person and virtually! Just behind teaching kids how to read, I have passion for working with teachers. I have taught graduate level courses and professional development on researched-based literacy practices online and in person.
