I am a 17-year-old attending Del Sol Academy of Performing Arts as a magnet costume major. I have a loud personality and always try to stand out!
I have had many wonderful opportunities to work with those in the theater department and participate in shows with them. My first experience of crewing a show and working with the whole production crew was when we did the musical Wizard of Oz during my freshman year. I worked in class with fellow costume majors to make poppy costumes. Me and a friend were in charge of two different parts of the costumes and then putting them together, it was my responsibility to make the green poncho and add the leaves. I had to go back and forth between communicating and helping explain what I was doing so others could help and after I communicated it made it so much easier because so many people knew what to do to help. Outside of the classroom I also volunteered to crew the show and had to dress the trees for in their costumes for my first quick change. I had to talk to all the actors and memorize how they preferred to get help. These experiences and the patience of those who had done this before helped me learn to work with others, especially on crews.
The more recent example of me collaborating with others is in working with the incoming freshman. I have been helping mentor the freshman and it's a huge change for me because I'm the one who's having to be patient now. I've been learning how to be open to others helping and letting them do it by themselves. They've even been helping me learn how to explain things verbally instead of physically. I've been working with them by helping them with patterns and even explaining how a sewing machine works. It's been a wonderful experience seeing myself in them and doing all I can to help when we work together. They have given me many new experiences and challenges to overcome such as the show capes and teaching them ladder stitches.
More recently I've been lucky enough to join the Las Vegas Fashion Council. I earned this partnership by competing and winning in their annual Little Black Dress competition in 2025. First, we had a time limit of 20 days to make a full outfit for the runway. Then our school had a small competition where we voted for the top 5 outfits we wanted to represent us on the runway. After that was the official LVFC competition where we were split into categories of amateur and emerging designers with 15 in my group and 8 in the other category. I walked the runway and managed to win first place for my outfit.
I am thrilled to announce that I have the opportunity to participate in the LVFC's upcoming fashion show: the Eco Couture competition. This event is centered around sustainability, so the LVFC partnered with Goodwill of Southern Nevada to provide us with a wonderful competition. So, thank you to the LVFC and Goodwill for giving me and my fellow competitors this opportunity. Stay tuned to see the progress and the outfit!
