Today we're learning about Haiku. Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry consisting of 3 lines with a specified syllable pattern of 5, 7, 5. We will create Quarantine Haiku's to capture this moment in time that we are living in. Next we will perform a Children's hand game from Japan called O'Mochio. The game emulates two mochi makers working together to make the perfect mochi dough. One is hammering the dough to loosen up the fibers while the second is turning and flattening the dough. Don't get your hand smashed as you play this fun hand game!

Today we're going into the garden! First we start out with a song and fingerplay called "A Little Seed". Next we read a story called "Up in the Garden, Down in the Dirt", by Kate Messner. While listening to the story we play a water xylophone. Ask an adult to help create your own water xylophone. You need 3 - 5 glasses filled up with different levels of water. Place the glasses in order from lowest to highest. You can check high and low by tapping on each glass. I used a chopstick. If you make a water xylophone be sure to send me a picture or video of you playing!

In today's lesson we will continue our celebration of Mexican culture. First we will learn a traditional Mexican song, "Dale, Dale, Dale". This song is sung while hitting a piñata! Then we will perform a dance called "Los Machetes". This dance is traditionally performed by men with machetes or large knives. The dance depicts the farmers in the fields cutting down crops. Today we will perform a variation using paper towel rolls!

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
Today is the 5th of May. On this day in 1862, Mexico was victorious in a battle against France, even though the odds were stacked against them. In the U.S. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican culture. People celebrate by sharing a meal, playing traditional Mexican music, and dancing traditional Mexican dances.
Today we are celebrating Mexican culture by singing "Los Pollitos", a Mexican children's song, making Maracas, and dancing the national dance of Mexico "El Jarabe Tapatio" also known as the "Mexican Hat Dance" or "La Raspa".

Making Waves in Music!
In todays lesson we are exploring the relationship between size and pitch when it comes to instruments. Mrs. McConnell will be sharing her recorder collection. Each recorder is a difference size and plays in a different range. We'll explore why that is, using water. Hope you enjoy today's musical moment!

Hello Forbuss Falcons! Today is all about Rabbits! First I share a story about a very special rabbit that lives in my backyard. Then we do a little finger play called "Five Little Bunnies". You can print, color and cut out your own bunnies by clicking here. Next we sing a song with my friend Bella. We sing a song called John the Rabbit. The recording you hear in the video can be found here. Lastly, we end the lesson by performing the bunny hop! Make a bunny train with your family while you perform the dance! The recording to this can be found here. Have fun making music at home!
In today's video you will need to make 4 beat cards. The directions are below. See if you can tap the patterns that Mrs. McConnell taps. As an extension find a person at your house and perform the activity with them! Take turns creating patterns for each other.
Materials needed:
2 pieces of paper
1 pair of scissors
Marker
Beat Card Instructions:
Fold the two pieces of paper in half then cut along the folded line. Now you should have 4 half sheets of paper. Number each piece of paper 1 - 4
This week we will be sharing songs that we have learned in the music classroom! Perform the songs for your family or teach them the music so they can perform with you.
Today's video comes from our 5th Grade music lessons. In the video we are performing the cup game! At the end of the video I challenge you to add a second cup to your pattern. After watching the video, see if you can find other songs that work with the cup game. Find songs that use different tempos or speeds. An extra challenge might be to play the cup game with other people in your house. See who can perform the pattern the longest without making any mistakes or try passing the cups to another person. Experiment and have fun!
There are many online resources to keep you engaged in music! Here are a couple of music sites I recommend. Let me know what you found while you were exploring!
This piece of music is called Pizzicato and was composed by Leo Delibes. Pizzicato is an Italian word meaning to "Pinch" or "Pluck" the strings, instead of using the bow. Find a found sound around the house to play along just like Romo and Mrs. McConnell did in the video!
In today's video, I am reading a story called Sing! This was originally a song written for Sesame Street and is about sharing the music in our hearts. My favorite line from the song is "Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song!" I've shared a link to a recording of the song, as well as other songs written by Joe Raposo. Click the link below to listen.
