Special education can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when navigating IEPs, evaluations, accommodations, services, and meetings. This page is designed to provide families with helpful information and resources to better understand the special education process.
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written plan designed to support a student who qualifies for special education services. An IEP may include:
Present levels of academic and functional performance
Annual goals
Special education and related services
Accommodations and modifications
Supplementary aids and supports
Assistive technology, when appropriate
Participation and placement information
Transition planning for eligible students
Progress monitoring and reporting
IEP meetings are an opportunity for the team to come together and discuss a student's progress, strengths, needs, goals, services, and supports.
Parents and guardians are important members of the IEP team. You are encouraged to:
Share information about your child's strengths and needs.
Ask questions.
Share concerns.
Review proposed changes.
Provide information that may help the team better understand your child.
Participate in developing goals and supports.
If you have questions or concerns before an IEP meeting, please reach out to your child's case manager or the Special Education Instructional Facilitator.
