2nd Grade

ACTIVITIES:

Reading

  • Create a diorama with a shoe box to go with a story you have read
  • Use a cereal box to create a book cover and back cover for a book you are reading. Write your own summary on the back.
  • Write a book recommendation for the class. Why would you recommend this book? What message/lesson/moral could the reader learn? Tell a few details about the characters and plot of the story.

Writing

  • Write your own fiction story
  • Give directions (how to play a game, or make up your own new game)
  • Write a letter to a classmate
  • Write a letter to your teacher
  • Research a topic (animal) on www.pebblego.com and create a poster/pamphlet or informational guide
  • Make your own picture book (could do a version of Pete the Cat, Pig the Pug or any other favorite)
  • Create questions and interview an adult (could even be over the phone)

Math

  • Tell time on the analog clock throughout the day
  • Count money (take turns putting a certain amount of coins and recording the answer using a number sentence-we typically stick with 5 or less coins)
  • Write your own book of story problems (1 a day) and solve

Science (all of these are from Pinterest)

  • Bouncy egg (vinegar dissolves the shell over a few days)
  • Make it rain (weather in a jar-shaving cream and food coloring)
  • Oobleck (solid and liquid using cornstarch)
  • Magic leprechaun rocks with hidden coins inside (must make in advance to harden)
  • Penny bridges (make a bridge with pennies that must hold a lego figure or a lego figure must be able to go under
  • Make a toilet paper car and record distance it rolls after multiple attempts, then modify by adding a figure and see if it rolls farther
  • Research different paper airplane designs, fold and fly. Record distance or time aloft. Modify plane to see if it could fly longer

For many of these science experiments, I would have the children keep a small science notebook.

  1. Name the activity
  2. Sketch or write steps to do activity
  3. Make predictions
  4. Write questions
  5. Sketch, label and write results
