AP 3D Art & Design is a college-level ceramics and sculpture course where students create a portfolio of original 3D artwork. The portfolio has two parts: a Sustained Investigation, where students explore an idea in depth through a series of related works, and Selected Works, which highlight their strongest pieces. The focus is on developing technical skills, exploring personal ideas, and building creative problem-solving. Instead of a test, students submit this portfolio in May, which may earn college credit.
AP 3D Art & Design is all about creating a portfolio instead of taking a test. Your portfolio has two parts:
Sustained Investigation – a series of artworks that explore one big idea or question you’re interested in.
Selected Works – your best, most polished pieces that show off your skills.
You’ll use clay (and sometimes other materials) to experiment, problem-solve, and develop your own artistic voice. By May, you’ll have a collection of work that represents both your creativity and growth as an artist.
