As the school librarian, my mission is to support and nurture both the academic growth and personal development of our students and the broader school community. I’m dedicated to going beyond the basic requirements of the job to create a library environment that’s not only welcoming but also truly accessible to everyone. I believe every student deserves the tools they need to succeed, and I want our library to be a place where they can expand on what they already know while also having the chance to relax, connect with friends, or simply be themselves.
My role involves more than just managing books and resources. It’s about being there to answer questions, help students find the information they need, keep supplies stocked, and maintain a collection that’s both educational and enjoyable. I want students to feel they can use the latest technology to their advantage—whether that means making a video, starting a podcast, or anything else they’re curious about. If a student asks, “Can I do this?” I want my answer to always be, “Yes, and here’s how I can help you.” My commitment extends beyond the classroom hours to be available before school, after school, and during lunch periods. I hope this flexibility helps students make the most of their time in the library and plan their days effectively.
I became a school librarian because I want to be a valuable extension of the classroom. I’m here to support teachers and students, whether it’s through co-teaching or providing resources that complement what’s being taught. At the same time, I want the library to be a haven where students feel comfortable and safe—a place to listen to music, check their devices, or play games.
I take great pride in curating and maintaining our library collection. While it might seem straightforward, it involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work like tracking usage and updating titles to keep the collection fresh and relevant. For instance, I might refresh the fiction section to include the latest popular titles that students are excited about.
Embracing the diversity of our school community is crucial to me. I strive to ensure that our library collection and its resources reflect a wide range of perspectives and experiences, helping students to engage with a variety of voices and stories throughout their high school years.
